ISKO UK Meetup - Semantic Web for BIM Based Construction Management

  • 8 Apr 2025
  • 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
  • Zoom

In our first Meetup of 2025, Asha Palihakkara from the University of Nottingham will talk about her research into application of semantic web technologies and ontologies in Building Information Modelling (BIM) environment and the International Conference on Computing in Civil and Building Engineering (ICCCBE) that was held in Montreal in 2024. Bonnie Bowes from Squirro and Daniel Loup from Arup are talking about reconciling taxonomies, including Global Revit Standard, across various disciplines using taxonomy register built with Graphite and are presenting case studies in buildings and infrastructure.

About Asha Palihakkara:

Asha Palihakkara is a PhD researcher at the University of Nottingham, specialising in Semantic Web applications for automated construction progress monitoring. She holds a B.Sc. (Hons) in Quantity Surveying from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. Asha has an academic background in construction informatics and risk management, having previously worked as an Assistant Lecturer at the University of Moratuwa. She has also contributed to multiple research projects as a Research Assistant, focusing on infrastructure resilience, construction automation, and risk management.

About Bonnie Bowes:

With background in developing taxonomies and managing taxonomy teams for major technology firms, Bonnie Bowes is a Semantic Graph Solutions Specialist at Squirro, a generative AI and graph solutions company. She holds master's degree in Library and Information Science from San José State University.

About Daniel Loup:

Daniel Loup is a civil engineer, specialising in water engineering, with experience in the design and assessment of sustainable drainage systems and flood alleviation schemes in Hong Kong, Vietnam, Cambodia, Philippines and United Kingdom. Daniel has led the development and implementation of innovative data-driven workflows for the parametric design, climate resilience assessment, asset management and building information modelling of various systems and asset types. He is also a member of Arup's global taxonomy and ontology management team, shaping best practice guidance and providing technical support for Arup's knowledge organisation system hosted on Graphite.
