Interactive workshop: getting started with VocBench (step 1)
VocBench is a web-based open source application which allows building knowledge organisation systems using SKOS, but it needs a bit of work to get it running. In this interactive workshop, we walked through prerequisites and the local set up of VocBench step-by-step while developing a simple taxonomy using a Simple Knowledge Organisation System (SKOS).
A Simple Knowledge Organisation System (SKOS) provides a standard way to represent knowledge organisation systems such as thesauri, classification schemes, subject heading systems and taxonomies within the framework of the Semantic Web.
The slide deck, handouts and video file are available for viewing.
Speakers: Phil Stacey works for Barratt Homes implementing document management and fire safety in the southern counties division. Phil has over 25 years experience in the construction industry working in design and information management. He is passionate about realising the business benefit structured data and the benefits BIM (Building Information Modeling) software can deliver through its implementation at scale, across the housing sector.
Eugene Morozov is a technology consultant working with financial services firms on data governance and data management projects. Interested in the use of linked data to improve reference data management, architecture modelling and regulatory compliance, he used SKOS and VocBench to develop enterprise architecture vocabulary in his last assignment. He also runs the Semantic Web London meetup.
